During the course of my work as a Guidance Counsellor, I have had many opportunities to speak with students and parents about the issues, which I address in this guide. I have been privileged to present seminars and lectures to young people and adults about various aspects of study and examination preparation. In my interactions with young people, both individually and in groups, I have always been very impressed by their determination to do well in their studies and examinations.

A New Year always brings with it the hope of health, success and good fortune. For about 60,000 people who are squaring up to the Leaving Certificate Examination next June, 2008 is an especially important year. During the month of January, these, mainly young, people are faced with the task of giving serious thought to their future plans.

As soon as the Christmas holidays are over and schools reopen, the thoughts of Leaving Certificate students begin to firmly focus on their future career plans. For those applying for a third level place, the impending closing date of 1st February does bring a certain degree of urgency to the task of filling out the CAO application form.
